Expect offensive fireworks from Vick, Eagles vs Jaguars

The Philadelphia Eagles head to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars this Sunday afternoon and expect the Eagles offense and Michael Vick to light it up against the Jaguars. In fact, I think that Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson could be one of the highest scoring receivers in fantasy football this week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are currently 29th in the league against the pass. In the first two weeks of the season, they gave up 117 yards to Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Lloyd and 95 yards to San Diego Chargers reviver Malcom Floyd. Those are not receivers with DeSean Jackson’s playmaking ability. In those two games, the Jaguars surrender 629 passing yards.

Now, when you add in Michael Vick’s scrambling ability which causes defenses to break coverage, I think you have the formula for 2 maybe three big plays this afternoon from Jackson.

There should be some cause for concern about the Eagles defense after allowing Shaun Hill and the Lions to put up 32 points last week. Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best ran wild against the Eagles and now enter Maurice Jones-Drew of the Jaguars. It goes without saying that he must be contained. Jaguars QB David Garrard is pedestrian at best, and is prone to making mistakes.

The Philadelphia Eagles should cruise to victory in this game and head into week four in the biggest game of the week as the Philadelphia Eagles will be taking on Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins.

Eagles DeSean Jackson thinks both QB’s can take Philly to the Super Bowl

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson thinks that both Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb are capable of taking the Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl. Obviously the coaching staff might not agree with DeSean Jackson at the current time and that is why Michael Vick has been named the starter. Jackson was a guest on WIP in Philadelphia with Howard Eskin and Ike Reese, you can listen to the entire interview right here.

Jackson told the hosts that he thinks he should be playing quarterback. “I told coach Reid, you can just put me in there. I can play quarterback myself and we’ll have no problems”.

When asked about the stability of the locker room given the Michael Vick/Kevin Kolb controversy, Jackson responded,

“Honestly, I think everyone supports the situation and the decision that Coach Reid made. All of us know it’s a tough situation. It’s tough obviously on Kevin to be able to sustain an injury like that… It’s a tough situation, but we all support each other. Coach Reid does a great job of telling everybody in the locker room that, ‘We are going to keep it in house and we’re not going to let it break us down.’ He feels and we feel the same way that we have two quarterbacks that take us to winning games and lead us to the Super Bowl.”

Vick named starter for Eagles, Kevin Kolb out

In a strange turn of events, the Philadelphia Eagles this afternoon suddenly issued a statement via text message that Michael Vick was the new starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and Kevin Kolb would become the back-up quarterback. All indications and reports over the weekend stated that Kevin Kolb was healthy and recovered from his concussion. After defeating the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Michael Vick and Eagles head coach Andy Reid both gave glowing endorsements of Kevin Kolb and pronounced him as the starter for the Eagles this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jason LaCanfora is reporting via Twitter that Eagles head coach Andy Reid says, “Michael Vick is playing out of his mind right now, and that is a beautiful thing.” Reid also says that Kevin Kolb has not requested a trade and that Reid spent two days with Kolb prior to announcing his decision. Reid also syas that with Mike Vick as quarterback, he “Absolutely” believes the Eagles can win the Super Bowl this season.

So, all you Eagles fans who gave me a bunch of crap for doubting Kevin Kolb and his play in the preseason, where are you at now? Would you rather stick with Kolb to try to prove your point or go with the hot hand in Vick? I watched every single Eagles preseason game, I know what I saw, Kolb looked bad. I saw the first half of the Eagles/Packers game, Kolb looked bad. So for all of you who visited this preseason to tell me I didn’t know what I was talking about when I gave harsh criticism on Kevin Kolb, feel free to visit the message board again.

Philadelphia Eagles have signed a running back

The Philadelphia Eagles have apparently signed Joique Bell off the practice squad from the Buffalo Bills. The Eagles are trying to send a message to Mike Bell, whom they signed as a free agent this offseason and played wih the New Orleans Saints last season. In case you are unfamiliar with Joique Bell, he is a player I am very high on. Bell had a very productive preseason with the Buffalo Bills running for 152 yards on 27 carries and comes with an impressive resume.

Bell was the winner of the Harlon Hill award last season, which is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy of Dision-II football. Last season while playing at Wayne State in Michigan, Bell rushed for 2,084 yards and scored 29 touchdowns. I’ve included a small video so you can watch some of his highlights last season in college.

Reid,Vick say Philadelphia Eagles are Kolb’s team

After defeating the Detroit Lions on the road 35-32, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid and QB Michael Vick clearly stated that the Philadelphia Eagles are Kevin Kolb’s team. In a game which wound up being much closer than it should have been, Michael Vick again proved that he can move the Philadelphia Eagles offense, completing 21 of 34 passes for 284 yards and two scores. Michael Vick finished the day with a 108.0 passer rating.

It was reported before the game yesterday, that Eagles QB Kevin Kolb had finally passed his concussion test and could have played yesterday but Andy Reid held him out as a precaution. Vick’s performance simply poured gasoline on the debate which will no doubt be raging all week over whether or not Vick should start over Kolb.

Kolb has struggled all preseason and quite simply doesn’t have the starting experience that Vick has. Sports talk radio will be filled with callers with their opinions all week I’m sure. I think Andy Reid will stay true to his word and make Kolb the starter this week against Jacksonville on the road. I hope it’s because he wants to give Kolb an opportunity to showcase what he can do and is simply not putting him in to start because he is making more money.

The Philadelphia Eagles fan s are not going to be as patient I’m sure as Andy Reid will be. After the first three and out series Eagles fans will be screaming for Vick.

Philadelphia Eagles should roll today

This week, against the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia eagles should roll. The Lions will be starting QB Shaun Hill in place of injured QB Matthew Stafford and I fully expect that the Eagles will be serving up a healthy dose of defensive blitzes coming out of nearly every direction to confuse Hill.

The Detroit Lions significantly upgraded their defensive line this past offseason with the acquisition of DE Kyle VandenBosch and then they drafted rookie DT Ndamukong Suh. However the Lions secondary is suspect, the Lions were juggling players in their defensive secondary right up until the final roster cutdowns. Lions safety, Louis Delmas did not practice on Friday with a groin injury, but reports out of Detroit claim that he will in fact play today.

The Lions offense should be slowed with the addition of Hill under center, there by decreasing the effectiveness of WR Calvin Johnson. The Lions did add rookie Jahvid Best in this years draft. While Best did score two touchdowns last week, he only managed to rush for 20 yards on 14 carries.

It should be a very interesting Monday in Philadelphia if Vick posts really good numbers. Then again, Kevin Kolb needs to pass his concussion tests before there can be a full blown quarterback controversy just yet.

Kevin Kolb officially ruled out for Sunday

As if there was going to be any doubt, the Philadelphia Eagles have officially ruled quarterback Kevin Kolb out of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. I believe the Philadelphia eagles should easily beat the Detroit Lions, especially with Matthew Stafford out of the game and Shaun Hill starting under center. This now means that Michael Vick is officially now the starting quarterback for the Eagles.

Vick should be able to post strong numbers against a re-building Detroit Lions team and will no doubt spark a lively debate on Philadelphia blogs and sports talk radio shows next week. While I do not think starting quarterbacks should lose their starting job due to injury, I do think that Michael Vick, IF he performs as well against the Detroit Lions as he did against the Green Bay Packers, should continue to be the starter for the Eagles.

I wrote at length in this space that I did not think Kevin Kolb was ready to be the starter. Once defenses got enough film on him, opposing teams would be able to shut him down. It didn’t take opposing teams, he demonstrated during the preseason that he was not running the offense efficiently. The Eagles offense needs a mobile quarterback and Kolb is simply not that guy. So if Vick has another superb game this week, all the pressure will rest on Andy Reid’s shoulders to name a starter for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then in week 4, the matchup that Philadelphia Eagles fans have been waiting for, the Washington Redskins and Donovan McNabb come to the Linc.

Eagles Vick to start Sunday

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting this morning that Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick will start on Sunday for the Eagles against the Detroit Lions. QB Kevin Kolb has yet to pass any of his concussion tests and hasn’t even been cleared to attend team meetings, so Vick will be the starter in Detroit.

Many Philadelphia Eagles fans cheered when Donovan McNabb was traded and Kevin Kolb was given a new contract during the offseason. I said that I would like to see Kolb prove himself on the field first before jumping on the bandwagon. Kolb struggled in the Eagles offense this preseason which I pointed out and several readers jumped all over me saying he’d be just fine. Well it seems as if the love affair with Kevin Kolb lasted about 1 quarter in the first game. Kolb struggled under center and then got booed by the fans from the City of Brotherly Love.

Kolb suffers a concussion, in comes Vick who looked like Steve Young, almost rally’s the team for a win and you have the makings of a quarterback controversy. If Vick performs at the same level in Detroit that he performed against the packers last Sunday, Kolb will be given no room for error when he returns. The first three and out series and the calls for Vick will start up.

You have to wonder though, if Vick does perform well on Sunday against the Lions, will Andy Reid stick to his word and keep Kolb the starter, or will he go with the hot hand and keep Vick under center?

Eagles to bring in Owen Schmitt

The Philadelphia Eagles lost starting FB Leonard Weaver for the season yesterday after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the game against the Green Bay Packers. Weaver’s injury was gruesome to watch on the television replays. The human leg isn’t meant to move that way. So the Philadelphia Eagles are scrambling to fill their need at fullback.

Former New York Jets RB Jason Davis Tweeted that he is on his way to Philadelphia for a workout with the Eagles. Another fullback who is reportedly on his way to Philly is Owen Schmitt. Schmitt was released by the Seattle Seahawks this preseason.

One can only hope that Schmitt keeps his helmet on during his workout.

Vick starting for Philadelphia Eagles?

Wearing their Kelly green uniforms to commemorate their 1960 championship season, the Philadelphia Eagles fell to the Green Bay Packers 27-20, but the question needs to be asked if Michael Vick should be starting. Prior to leaving the game with a concussion, Eagles QB Kevin Kolb was ineffective moving the football against the Green Bay Packers. Prior to entering the game as the full time quarterback, the Philadelphia Eagles had only managed 3 first downs.

Michael Vick not only led the Eagles in passing but he led the Eagles in rushing. Vick didn’t look like the player he was in 2009, he looked like the Michaek Vick that the league saw in 2005. He was very effective as a passer, ending the game with a 101.9 passer rating.

No doubt that sports talk radio shows in Philly this morning will be flooded with callers clamoring for Mike Vick to be named the starter. Given the slow start that Kevin Kolb has experienced this preseason, and the level of play Vick had yesterday, it would be understandable.

Kolb will need to be cleared medically before he is able to play next week. If Vick gets the starting nod and plays again as well as he did yesterday, the calls will continue to the sports talk shows.
