Should Philadelphia Eagles fans be worried?
[picappgallerysingle id="9618066"]
Philadelphia Eagles fans should be worried about the upcoming season. Eagles QB Kevin Kolb is struggling as I predicted and it could be the start of a very long season for the Eagles. A majority of Philadelphia Eagles fans rejoiced when Donovan McNabb was shipped out of town this past Spring, but as I wrote, be careful what you wish for. Replacement Kevin Kolb has looked horrible this preseason, failing to lead the Eagles on a touchdown drive. This past weekend, Kolb only completed 11 of 25 passes for 103 yards. He threw an interception and was sacked 4 times. He completed the game with a passer rating of 39.2.
Now I understand, preseason games are just that, preseason but you would hope that during the course of playing in limited action in one of the three preseason contests, that the quarterback you have entrusted your offense to, could at least lead the team on one touchdown drive. It doesn’t even need to be a passing touchdown, a running back could run in a score, anyone?
I understand that teams don’t like to tip their hands during the preseason but come on, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams and the Detroit Lions, all have had their starting quarterbacks lead at least one scoring drive this preseason. Wouldn’t you like to see some sort of spark? Something?
Maybe this is all part of the veiled plan, and in week one Kevin Kolb comes out and throws 4 touchdowns and tops 300 yards passing. That might be great if you hang your hat on the “I hope” bandwagon, but the reality of preseason is that Kolb has looked horrible. And as Kolb goes, so goes the Eagles. I wonder how many Eagles fans will be wishing McNabb was back under center by week 10?
Redskins McNabb still complaining about Eagles
Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb has been with his new club for months now but he can’t seem to stop talking about the Philadelphia Eagles. In the current issue of GQ magazine, McNabb complains that “no one in the organization ever stepped up and said anything”.The full interview is available at GQ.com
[picappgallerysingle id="9574863"]
McNabb in the interview, outlines a meeting he had after the conclusion of the 2008 season where he expressed his frustration with the lack of support from the Eagles front office and coaching staff. McNabb said, “They’ll say something to you in the building, but not publicly. My feeling was, I’m out here getting cut up, where are you? I’m always defending and helping you guys, but where’s that support?”
McNabb went on to blame an official for the 13-13 tie with the Cincinnati Bengals in November of 2008. The game ended in a tie because McNabb said an official told him that there would be another 5 minute period after the 15 minute overtime period expired.
I would like to find that official and see if his account of what happened actually went down the way he claims. I cannot for the life of me believe that an official would tell him that there was going to be another 5 minute period. At the coin toss at the start of overtime, the rules are explained to each team. As a player who had been in the league 11 years at that point, he should have known the rules.
It seems as if there is always someone else to blame with McNabb. Something isn’t always just perfect for him. You see he’s already banged up in the Redskins training camp, walking the field in a boot yesterday and not practicing. It will be interesting to see how many weeks it takes before he implodes with the Redskins and their lack of serious receiving talent.
What is Eagles Ernie Sims so mad about?
[picappgallerysingle id="9532018"]
We know that Philadelphia Eagles LB Ernie Sims is happy to be out of Detroit and playing for the Lions, but what is he so mad about? Sims has been a very aggressive player for the Eagles during their off season and especially recently in training camp with pads on.
The Eagles coaches love his passion but perhaps they’d like to see him ease up just a bit on his own teammates. Eagles defensive coordinator, Sean McDermott loves his passion as well but told reporters on Monday, “I love his attitude…but we have to know how to practice together and take care of each other”.
Sims apparently laid out Eagles TE Brent Celek as he was going across the middle for a pass reception.
I love the passion, but dammit man, let’s save the offensive players for the games. We don’t need to be taking them out in practice.
Cowboys Jones LOVES Eagles Kolb
[picappgallerysingle id="9523112"]
The Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones loves Philadelphia Eagles QB Kevin Kolb? Speaking to Philly.com, Jones expressed his approval of the Eagles decision to trade Donovan McNabb away to the Washington Redskins.
Jones said, “McNabb helped create those big swings in our games over the last 10 years. When he played well, it was like throwing the knockout punch. When he didn’t, you were able to throw the knockout punch. I don’t see that now (with Kolb). I think Kolb and the way they’re going about it now, you won’t have those big swings one way or the other. I think every game with them is going to be a battle. Because of Kolb and because the makeup of the rest of their team is sold. And their coach, there is not a better coach in the league than Reid”.
Now wait just one single freaking moment. Jerry Jones giving props to the Eagles organization on their offseason moves? Andy Reid is the best coach in the league? What is Wade Phillips thinking about now? Whats next, cats and dogs sleeping together?
Jerry is aware that his team will still have to face McNabb twice a year? You have to check in on Jerry’s stability once in a while.
Eagles policy- Just say No to McNabb
[picappgallerysingle id="2283502"]
Apparently the Philadelphia Eagles have decided Donovan McNabb jerseys are not welcome during practice. Well, at least McNabb jerseys from the Washington Redskins. Geoff Mosher of the Wilmington News Journal Tweeted this morning that someone attended Eagles practice this morning wearing a McNabb Redskins jersey and was asked to remove it.
Given the divisiveness that McNabb caused during his tenure with the Eagles, that is most likely a wise policy. I’m certain that the person most likely had a few comments from others watching the practice before the Eagles management asked him to remove the jersey. Then again, if you wear a Redskin jersey at an Eagles practice, what do you expect?
Eagles wanted Cowboy’s Aikman?
[picappgallerysingle id="3614048"]
A Dallas Cowboy at QB for the Philadelphia Eagles? Really? It just might have happened. Troy Aikman appeared on WQAM-AM in Miami, Florida this week to discuss their teammate Emmitt Smith’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton this weekend.
Aikman was asked by WQAM co-host Kevin Kiley that he had heard a rumor about the Philadelphia Eagles wanting to sign Aikman in 2002 after McNabb had broken his ankle against the Cardinals.
Aikman responded-
“Well, I was a couple years out of the game at that time. Donovan McNabb had broken his leg. I’d gotten a call from the Eagles. They were wanting me to sign with them and then report to Philadelphia the next day and leave broadcasting. You know, I gave it a little bit of consideration. I talked to a couple of people that I really respect and at the end of the day I said, ‘Wow, I can go to Philadelphia for five or six games or whenever Donovan gets healthy again and then really kind of be done with football or I can continue in this job that I currently have that hopefully will be hear for a long time.’ It wasn’t much of a decision for me in that situation, but a year later I had a club that approached me as soon as the off-season began and asked me if I would consider coming out of retirement and playing for them. It was a situation that would have been ideal.”
Well, there you have it. Aikman, a Cowboy as the Eagles quarterback. He was never signed so Koy Detmer and A.J Feeley filled in instead. Would a quarterback 2 years removed from the game made a difference in the 2002 season, most likely not but it sure does make an interesting story.
The long odds for Eagles Kevin Kolb
[picappgallerysingle id="1862439"]
The Philadelphia Eagles are starting a new quarterback under center for the first time in under a decade, Kevin Kolb Michael Salfino of the Wall Street Journal wrote a column about the long odds which will be facing Kolb.
Salfino lays out the difficulty teams face when replacing a veteran quarterback with an inexperienced one. He points out that Kolb is just the 5th quarterback in recent history with less than 80 completions to replace a Pro-Bowl quarterback, and in the past, that formula was a recipe for disaster. Most recently, Aaron Rodgers taking over for Brett Favre in Green Bay where he compiled a 6-10 record his first year.
I think some might have placed unreasonable expectations on Kolb and there is going to have to be a modicum of patience required as Kolb finds his way. Patience and Eagles fans are two things not usually found in the same sentence.
I believe Kolb has plenty of offensive weapons surrounding him but the defense could actually be the problem plaguing Kolb this season. There is a lot of talent on the Eagles defensive side of the ball, but also a lot of youth. If the defense doesn’t come together quickly for the Eagles, they could place Kolb in the position of playing from behind in many games. Not really something a rookie quarterback, or any quarterback for that matter relishes.
Eagles have lots to like with Brandon Graham
[picappgallerysingle id="9487567"]
The Philadelphia Eagles fans have to like draft selection Brandon Graham. The speedy defender should be sacking quarterbacks and winning fans in 2010. Graham appeared on WIP and spoke about a few things. You can here the entire interview right here.
Graham basically told the hosts that he didn’t want people to think he was greedy with a holdout. Then he said he was well aware of the fans in Philadelphia and that he has Tony Romo in his sights.
I expect Graham to have a big year in this defense. Graham is speedy player off the edge, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see him competing for the defensive rookie of the year award at the end of the season.
The Eagles received a scare a few days ago with WR Jeremy Maclin being carted off the field with an injury. It’s being reported today that Maclin expects to be back on the practice field soon. His injury is being described as a deep bone bruise.
Eagles lose another receiver at practice?
[picappgallerysingle id="4698760"]
It is being reported this afternoon that Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin has suffered an injury during today’s training camp session. First it was DeSean Jackson, and now Maclin. According to Joe Fortenbaugh via Twitter, Maclin went down in practice, was carted off holding his knee.
RT @JoeFortenbaugh: Maclin goes down with leg injury and is getting carted off. Was holding his knee on the ground.
This cannot be good news for the Philadelphia Eagles heading into 2010. Maclin came on last season with the Eagles, recording 56 receptions for 773 yards and 4 scores.
